Our local Church of England First School in Hormead is fundraising to support children in Zimbabwe who are suffering from malnutrition because of the collapse of the economy and the impact of Covid-19. Through the Bishop of St Albans Harvest Appeal and through our own contacts we have supported the work of Tearfund for many years. Driven by Christian values, this charity is providing tools, knowledge and support for sustainable development to lift poor and disaster-hit communities out of poverty, around the world. We are very concerned about the increasing number of families living locally who rely on Food Banks. The collapse of some parts of the economy due to Covid-19 has meant many people working in hospitality, entertainment and retail sectors have lost their jobs. And while the state has provided record levels of support, not everybody can manage the transition from employment to the benefits system. Many continue to struggle to get by and quite a few, unable to navigate the system or not quite meeting the criteria for state aid, slip between the cracks. The local food banks help plug those gaps and we have been collecting food every couple of months to help keep them stocked. In 2020 we estimate over 2 tonnes of food has been donated and helped over 60 local families in need. We continue to accept donations in our churches. The BRAVE Trust
Through the Brave Trust, we help fund a schools worker to help teach and share the Christian faith among children and young people in and around Buntingford and Royston and support them in their faith.
