Baptisms

Being baptised or Christened (these are different words for essentially the same thing) is the formal start of belonging to a wider church family and being a follower of Jesus Christ.

You can be baptised at any time in life but you can only be baptised into the Christian Faith once.  In the Church of England we recognise baptisms in other christian denominations. So if you have been baptised as a Catholic, a Baptist, a Mathodist or another form of Christian church, that's great, You don't need to do it again. You can belong to to our church just by turning up and worshipping God with us. But we can also formally welcome you into the Church of England and we encourage all church members to come forward for Confirmation - a ceremony, conducted by a bishop, where candidates afirrm their Christian faith for themselves.

In this benefice we rejoice to welcome new members taking that first step into the body of Christ and we routinely baptise chldren and adults. So if this is the reason you've clicked on this page, you are in the right place.

For may people baptism takes place when we are children - it's when the term Christening usually applies. And we have parents and godparents to make crtain promises and declarations of faith on our behalf. But as adults we can make those declarations for ourselves.

We hold special services that include baptism as ppart of our regular worship or specially arranged services.

For children we want to know about their family and get to know the parents who we hope will want to attend church before and after their child is baptised.

For adults, ahead of baptism we offer a short course to go deeper into faith and pprepare candidates not only for baptism, but for Confirmation shortly after.

You may well have many questions about this service and what it will mean for you, your family or the Godparents that you have chosen.  Please get in touch to talk further and to make the arrangements for the service. You'll find some helpful additional information abut Christenings on the Church of England website HERE

If you wish to be Baptised as an adult getin touch to discuss it further. You'll find some additional information on the Church of England website about Adutlt Baptism HEREIf you see images of people being baptised using the full-body immersion technique, please don't worry if that is a concern for you. We normally just pour a little water on your head over the font.
